Higher Tariffs are coming to Vinyl Flooring

May 22, 2019 at 6:58 pm

Tariffs on vinyl flooring from China started at 10% in September of 2018 and are currently subject to a  25%  tariff on all new orders.  Goods in transit as of last week will not be subject to the additional tariff.  Inventory already on hand is also not subject to the additional 15% tariff. Chinese imports of vinyl flooring  are at least 55 percent of the U.S. market so this will be a large tax for anyone purchasing vinyl flooring after the next couple of weeks.

Many U.S. vinyl flooring and tile makers are pushing for tariffs on Chinese vinyl flooring saying  it will result in more domestic investment and jobs. Importers know it will lead to higher prices on vinyl products and increase the cost of new homes.  Many people will either postpone their home renovation project or purchase a less expensive product.

If you are considering vinyl tile for your home of offices you would be advised to start looking immediately and purchase what you need within the next two weeks or end up paying more because of the tariff. Vinyl tile is still very affordable and durable which is why it is the most popular type of flooring currently. This could change as people start using other products such as carpeting which is even less expensive and is almost as popular as vinyl flooring currently.  At Coventry flooring we offer carpeting and vinyl flooring and can give you a cost comparison after coming to your home or business and measuring the areas that need flooring.
