What is the fourth of July?
On the 4th July Americans will come together to mark Independence. The fourth of July marks when the US won independence from the British after the Revolutionary War.
What gives the Fourth of July its significance is that our Declaration of Independence was adopted by the Continental Congress in 1776. On July 2nd, 1776, the Continental Congress voted in favor of independence, and two days later on July 4th, delegates from the 13 colonies adopted the Declaration of Independence. It was drafted by Thomas Jefferson. July 4th has been celebrated as the birth of American independence, with festivities ranging from parades and fireworks to family barbeques.
